In the summer of 1902, two young men in their twenties, Armas Launis and Eino Levón, embarked on a journey to collect folk melodies in Kainuu and Koillismaa. Over the course of the summer, these university students collected a total of 574 melodies.

The book compiles the musical notations, travel reports, and diaries of these young travelers. Eino Levón’s diary also includes letters he sent home, which interestingly shed light on the political situation in the early 20th century. The majority of the photographs in the book are previously unpublished images taken by Samuli Paulaharju from 1915 to 1918 in Kainuu and Koillismaa.

The editing of the book was funded by the Juminkeko Foundation’s Folk Music Project.
